Family Programs at MoMA

Introduce children and adults to modern and contemporary art with free tours, art workshops, artist talks, special events, screenings, activity guides, and Web sites.  Please refer to the museum’s website for the most current listing of programs. 

Tours for Fours

A morning drop-in program specifically designed for four-year-olds and their parents/caregivers. Families are introduced to painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper, and more.

 

A Closer Look for Kids

A morning drop-in program for children ages five to ten and their parents/caregivers. Families explore artworks in the Museum's collection and special exhibitions through theme-based discussions and gallery activities.

Tours for Tweens

A series specifically designed for families with eleven- to fourteen-year-olds. Kids and adults engage in activities, share ideas, and exchange opinions about modern and contemporary artwork.

Family Art Workshops

Focus on exploration of artwork from the galleries and allow families to create artwork in hands-on workshops. For families with children ages 4–14.

 

Conversations with Contemporary Artists: The Family Edition

Families are given the opportunity to chat informally with contemporary artists about their inspirations and art-making techniques.

 

Family Films

Parents and children can enjoy classic live-action and animated short films, engaging discussions with a Museum educator, and suggestions for follow-up activities in the Museum's galleries. Suggested ages vary by screening.

 

Watch This! Films for Tweens

Story Time in the Sculpture Garden

Families spend the morning in The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. Listen to stories read by well-known authors and illustrators and discuss where writers and illustrators get their ideas, how books are made, and what materials illustrators use to create their work. All readings are followed by a book signing in MoMA Books. For children ages four to seven.

 

Destination: Modern Art, An Intergalactic Journey to MoMA and P.S.1

Travel to MoMA with an alien creature! "Listen" to a painting or create an on-line collage. Destination: Modern Art will tickle the senses as children ages five to eight explore paintings, sculptures, and installations through on-line activities and hands-on projects.

 

Admission is $20 for adults.  Children under 16 are free.

Gallery Workshops for Families at The Cloisters

Children ages 4 through 12 and their families are invited for an hour-long program at The Cloisters, the branch of the Museum devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe, located in upper Manhattan. Questions? Please call 212-650-2280.

Home Sweet Home, April 3
Folk art can give us a glimpse into how people may have lived in different places and time periods. Many objects in the museum depict various communities, while others, such as quilts, chairs, and even walls, were made to be used in the home. After the gallery discussion, families will create their own work of art to take home.

Available anytime, on loan, at the Information Desk. Last pick-up is at 4 pm. Filled with suggestions for things to do and talk about when visiting the museum, including artwork-specific question cards, touch objects, games, picture books, sketchpads and pencils, this activity pack is sure to enhance your family's experience of the exhibition!  Recommended for families with children ages 5–10.

Art Carts

Art Carts actively explore Japan Society Gallery Exhibits and other topics. A museum educator guides inquiry, helping children acquire context-building information while developing visual analysis and critical thinking skills. Families are invited to handle objects and artifacts.

 

Japan's Annual Festivities

Families participate in hands-on demonstrations, crafts and performances in our series of events organized around some of Japan’s annual festivities.  These include Oshogatsu (New Year’s Day), Hinamatsuri (Doll’s Festival), Kodomo no hi (Children’s Day), Tanabata (Star Festival),  Shichigosan, (7-5-3 Celebration), and Exploring Japan’s Mystical Folktale Creates & Ghosts through Kamishibai (which takes place around the time of Halloween).

Alongside architect Yves Roger, children ages 9-13 will explore skyscraper architecture and work on a hands-on building project, which they will be able to bring home. As they learn and work, children will be surrounded by images, vintage film and models of actual skyscrapers of the past, present and future.

For families with children ages 5—12

$20 per family, 10:30am-12:30pm.  Utilizing the Museum’s exhibitions, the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden, and the local neighborhood, family programs engage youth, adults, and families in specialized activities based on the design process. Family tours of current exhibitions are offered once a month on a Saturday morning. Young visitors and their families are invited to think like designers as they explore the Museum and become more aware of design and its impact on our everyday lives. Tours are followed by design-based activities, using the exhibitions as a source of inspiration for their own designs. Interactive, hands-on workshops are led by museum educators and noted designers.

 

Design Kids: Fashion as Collage

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Inspired by the collage piecework as seen in the Rodarte Quicktake exhibition, kids will make a hand sewn garment for their doll or stuffed animal using multiple kinds of fabric and trim. Hand sewing techniques will be taught. Bring your doll or stuffed animal and any scraps of fabric, trim or ribbon you’d like to incorporate into your design. Ages 5 -13.

Admission is $10.00 and children under age 12 are admitted free.

MetLife Foundation First Sundays for Families, 1-4:30pm

Every first Sunday of the month the Queens Museum of Art expands its regular family art workshop and engages participants of all ages in a roster of studio art, family-designed gallery tours and live music and dance performances, inspired by the museum’s permanent collection and changing exhibitions. Families have the opportunity to explore exhibitions through lively conversations in the galleries, and to engage in related creative activities. 

 

The Imaginary Museum: Dakis Joannou Collection

Impossible Possibilities: Playful Sculptures, March 6, 10am – 12pm

Discover several sculptures included in this exhibition, and, inspired by works such as Jeff Koons’s Equilibrium Tank (1985) or Robert Gober’s Pitched Crib (1987), create a flip book telling a story that will give new life to these works of art. 

Why Trash It?, April 3, 10am – 12pm

Explore the work of artist John Bock, Marc Bradford, and Richard Hundley and learn how they have repurposed waste materials. Using their work for inspiration, create a work of art using discarded materials. 

 

Admission is $12 for adults and all under 18 are free.  Target First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed for families with children 5 to 15 years old, and includes free New Museum admission for up to 3 adults per family.

Wee-Arts DROP IN

The Wee-Arts program offers an intimate and stimulating environment for children ages 10 months to 3 1/2 years to explore art making. This popular program develops a young child's familiarity with art making materials including playdough, paints, glue, and a variety of drawing tools.  Wee-Arts encourages the process of experimentation, exploration, and creative thinking.  Music and story time with singing and drumming end each session. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10:45am-12pm.

Admission is $10.  Pay as You Wish: Thursday 4-6pm. Wee-Arts Early Childhood Drop-In Class admission is $22 per family (group of 3).
